Chemical and Physical Restraints
In theory, nursing homes and other care facilities use restraints to protect their residents from falling or hurting themselves. In practice, nursing homes frequently use restraints to make the lives of staff easier. Patients who are not walking about are less likely to fall. Patients who are heavily medicated are less likely to try to get out of bed.
Restraints can be physical. These include tying down a patient’s arms with cuffs to prevent them from pulling out an IV or feeding tube or keeping the bed rails up to keep patients from getting out of bed unsupervised. Restraints can also be chemical, and include using sedatives, tranquilizers, and anti-psychotic drugs, to keep patients docile and immobile.
